The editors of the Springer Encyclopedia of Latin American Religions invite proposals for updated and newly commissioned entries for the Islam section in an upcoming revised edition. Scholars working on Islam in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latina/o/e/x communities in the United States are warmly encouraged to contribute.

We seek entries that reflect current scholarship, emerging research areas, and the expanding diversity of Muslim communities across the region. Contributions may be topical, geographical, or thematic, and may vary in length depending on the scope and importance of the subject.

Possible Topics Include (but are not limited to):

Topical Entries

  • Hosay

  • Halal trade and markets

  • Christian–Muslim relations

  • Race and ethnicity

  • Politics and public life

  • Migration and refugee experiences

  • Diasporas and transnational networks

  • Gender, sexuality, and family

  • Ritual, practice, and material culture

  • Education, media, and digital religion

Geographical Entries

  • Islam in Cuba

  • Islam in Argentina

  • Islam in Suriname

  • Islam in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru, or other national contexts

  • Islam in the Caribbean

  • Islam in the Latina/o/e/x United States

  • Comparative or regional overviews

Entry Lengths
  • Short entries: 650–2,000 words

  • Medium entries: 3,000–5,000 words

  • Long entries / key topics: 5,000–10,000 words

We welcome contributions from scholars at all career stages, including advanced graduate students, early career researchers, and established experts. Proposals that expand the geographic, thematic, or methodological scope of the Islam section are especially encouraged.

We look forward to your submissions and to assembling a comprehensive, up-to-date resource for the study of Islam in Latin America and its diasporic connections.
